Koops Troops

Melbourne Memory Walk & Jog

Koops Troops is one of the largest teams we’ve had at a Memory Walk & Jog – ever! They brought 140 people together for a 5km walk at the Melbourne event in 2019. Koops Troops was set up by Kenny, Shannon, Josh and Riley to honour Bev, their amazing wife and mum, who was diagnosed with Younger Onset Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of just 58. Together they raised a staggering $42,255, to support others in need and “hopefully find a cure one day”.

“Until it actually hits your own family…you don’t realise how many people need your help.” Many members of Koops Troops had family members who were also living with or had passed away due to dementia. Alzheimer’s disease heavily impacts the lives of those with a diagnosis, as well as their families and carers. So, together, they were determined to fight back at dementia by raising some vital funds. Shannon Koops said, it is “a soul and mind destroying disease” that was taking away all Bev’s “beautiful life memories”.

For Bev, it was a 4.5 year “fight and a battle”. Sadly, she died just before the event in 2019. We would have loved to see Bev’s “infectious smile” there, pushing us all on to do better! We’re sure she would have been incredibly proud of her family and friends turning up to carry on her fight.

Koops Troops are hoping to take part in Melbourne Memory Walk & Jog in 2020. They also hope to raise even more this time! Please be sure to check our website for their team page – and support them by joining up or donating.
