It’s more than just forgetfulness,
It’s more than just forgetting where you put your keys,
It’s more than just forgetting to grab a grocery item at the shop,
It’s more than just forgetting the date.
Alzheimer’s makes you lose your sense of self, you forget how to be the person you once were, everyday tasks that would come so naturally like washing your face, making your breakfast, brushing your teeth or even going to the toilet become impossible.
From an outsider looking in its ha ha ha forgetfulness and don’t get me wrong there are moments in the early days where you do laugh about it, cos if you don’t laugh you’ll cry. But for the family going through it you slowly watch the person you once knew and love disappear and you will never see that version of them again, ever. The chats they would once have, the calls they would make, the memories you would talk about, the daily errands they would run, the way they talked, laughed even, all dwindle away and you will never get them back.
Alzheimer’s makes you grieve a person who is still physically here but mentally gone. It makes you grieve them so many times as well, you grieve them when they’re first diagnosed for what is yet to come, you then grieve them as you watch the awful disease take everything you once knew about them, you grieve them with every life event they aren’t fully present in, it’s such a long and drawn out way to go.
Mum
Dementia has impacted our family more than once. From our great grandma, our nana and sadly now our mum. It’s been such a rapid decline for mum and so sad going through some major life events without her being there mentally. Such as getting married, having a baby, Gab and Linds finishing school, them turning 21, starting their first jobs, Felicity getting promoted in her work and moving to Melbourne. We’d love to raise as much as we can towards helping find a cure.We're doing the Albury-Wodonga Memory Walk & Jog to raise funds for the 421,000 Australian's living with dementia.
On Saturday, 3 May, we’ll be joining the Albury-Wodonga Memory Walk & Jog to show our love and help Dementia Australia.
And we need your support!
Did you know that 1.5 million carers, family members and friends are involved in the care of someone living with dementia in Australia. That's why we're hoping to raise as much money as possible. We'll be walking, jogging, and running to stop dementia in its tracks.
