Walk & Jog

Get Active. Beat Dementia.

Walk, jog or run – there’s a Memory Walk & Jog for everyone!

Together, we get active, we fundraise, and we step up for people living with dementia to say, ‘you are not alone!'.

Memory Walk & Jog is fun for the whole community! We’ve got a distance to suit you – whether you’re a fitness fanatic or a couch connoisseur, you can choose to walk, jog or run! So make sure you bring the whole family, turn your steps from KM’s to dollars to help create a dementia friendly world.

We love it when kids (and adults!) go that extra step with their fancy-dress outfits or show their passion in their Memory Walk & Jog T-shirts and Dementia Warrior gear!

Our walk courses are dog-friendly too. Remember to register your safe family dog, as passes are limited. We’ll give you a bandana they can wear as a dedicated dementia-defeating doggy! Get in quick as dog passes are limited!

Your health and safety is our top priority and we are committed to holding safe events. We are working with local council and state governments to comply with all current regulations, restrictions and health advice.

What is the Memory Walk & Jog course like?

Each Memory Walk & Jog event gives you different distances to choose from. Most of the courses are paved or concrete - perfect for walking, jogging or running! We want everyone to join us on the big day! That’s why all our Memory Walk & Jog events are designed to be accessible for you. Each location might have different terrain though. Find out more about your local event’s course or get in touch with us with any of your questions or concerns. If you have a disability permit, you can also reserve an Accessible Parking spot. Just contact us in advance and we’ll get that sorted for you.

Why should I fundraise for Memory Walk & Jog?

Feel good and make the world of difference to people living with dementia.

It’s a devastating condition. Which is why everyone impacted by dementia deserves a better today. To achieve that we need to give people with a dementia diagnosis, their families and carers meaningful support services, education and information.

Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia. We’re stepping up for people living with dementia. Help us make a difference! It takes the money you raise to not only make this support available – but to also grow Dementia Australia’s services, as more and more people in the community need our help.

We’ve got our eyes on the prize too. Making a better today for people living with dementia is vital, but tomorrow also matters. That’s why your support drives our non-stop research partnerships. Thanks to these seriously talented scientists, we can give family and friends hope that a future without dementia is possible.

Together, we can beat dementia to the finish line!

Why does fitness matter for brain health?

We all know that exercise is good for our bodies, but what about our brains? It turns out that brain health actually improves with regular physical activity. The old saying ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’ is true!

So, what happens when we get moving? Your brain works well (known as ‘improved brain function’), plus your thinking skills are less likely to deteriorate (known as ‘cognitive decline’). You also reduce your risk of dementia. It’s like a health boost for your mind!

Here’s how it works. Your physical activity increases the flow of blood to your brain. This encourages your brain cells and the connections between them to all grow.

Getting active also reduces your risk of high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol. These are all conditions which can increase your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Don’t worry if getting started with exercise feels daunting. Start small and build up at your own pace. It’s important to take it easy and avoid injury! And remember, exercise should be as enjoyable as possible. Find a physical activity that works for you – whether it’s running, aqua aerobics, pilates or a Memory Walk & Jog!
