I LOVE MY DAD GEORGE...HE HAS DEMENTIA.
The past 12 months have been a declining journey to see my plump, smart, strong intelligent and loving father wither away with this horrific disease called dementia. This time last year he was at the Dementia Australia memory walk event all smiles and cheering us on. One year down the track he is in an aged care home unable to walk or feed himself. His face lights up when I enter the room - but he does not know who I am. I re-introduce myself every time I see him and my eyes always fill with tears as I see my dad wasting away. Dementia does not just destroy the person with the disease but it eats away at the entire family and friend network who know them.
On Sunday 3 May, I’ll be taking part in the Melbourne Memory Walk & Jog to raise funds to support people with dementia just like my dad. All funds raised will support the work of Dementia Australia to provide vital support services for dementia sufferers, their families and carers which includes counselling, support groups, education and training.
Whatever you're able to donate is appreciated, even if it is just your prayers to find a cure for this horrid disease. I know my dad will be walking with us in spirit. Love you George Montey x
