I'm raising money for my Dad, Don and the 433,300 Australians living with dementia.
On Sunday, 22 February, I’ll be taking part in Canberra’s Memory Walk & Jog to raise funds for Dementia Australia — a cause that is deeply personal to me for many reasons.
Most importantly, my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease over 10 years ago. We have always shared a very close relationship, but over time I have witnessed his slow and heartbreaking decline. There are now many days when he doesn’t recognise me, and some days when he doesn’t even know that he has a daughter. Dementia has gradually taken pieces of the person I know and love, and that loss is something my family and I continue to grieve.
Alongside this, I also see the impact of dementia every day through my work as a personal trainer, and running exercise classes for older adults. Several of my clients live with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, and many more are carers — supporting partners, parents, or loved ones through their own dementia journey. Dementia is not a condition that affects individuals alone. It affects families, friendships, and entire communities.
Dementia brings fear, frustration, sadness, and profound grief. But it also highlights the importance of compassion, understanding, and support. While our knowledge of dementia continues to grow, we are only just beginning to appreciate how complex and individual each person’s experience truly is. That’s why the work of Dementia Australia is so vital — providing education, counselling, support services, and funding research that brings us closer to better treatments and, one day, a cure.
This is why I’m walking. This is why I’m asking for your support.
Any donation, big or small, will help make a real difference to people living with dementia, their families, and their communities. Together, we can create hope, improve quality of life, and work towards a future where fewer families have to experience this heartbreak.
Thank you for supporting this cause that means so much to me. 💙
