I'm raising money for my Mum and the 446,500 Australians living with dementia.
On Sunday June 7th I will be running the 10km Dementia Walk & Jog at Pratten Park, Broadbeach on the Gold Coast in honour of my beautiful Mum, Robyn.
Mum is only 62 years old. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia at just 59. In the years since, we have watched this cruel disease take so much from her far too quickly.
Alzheimer’s is devastating. It doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed, it sends ripples through an entire family. It changes everything. The roles you once knew slowly shift, and life becomes something you never imagined it would be.
Mum now lives in an NDIS Supported Living home where she receives the care she needs. She requires 1:1 support, and is surrounded by such lovely and down to earth ladies who provide this and more for her. While this reality is incredibly difficult, I am endlessly grateful for the beautiful, kind carers who look after her every day. They support her with so much compassion and patience, and they have truly become part of our family.
Watching someone you love disappear piece by piece is one of the hardest things a family can go through. But through it all, Mum still reminds me what love really looks like and is still the happiest and kindest person I know.
Life is crazy.
The roles have changed so much that these days I often feel like I’ve become the “Mum” to her. While that is heartbreaking, it’s also something I hold with deep love and gratitude, because she spent my whole life being that person for me.
That’s why I’m running.
I’m hoping to raise as many funds and as much awareness as possible for dementia research. My wish is that one day there will be better treatments, better support, and hopefully a cure, so that future families don’t have to experience the heartbreak that this disease brings.
If you’re able to donate, share this page, come for a jog or simply support the cause, it would mean the world to my family and I.
Thank you for helping me run for Mum. 💙
