Tess Rolley's Lucky 7's (107km) run to raise funds for people with dementia!
Iāll be completing MY Memory 107km ("lucky 7's") run to raise funds to support those living with or affected by dementia. I will be running these km's in honour of my wonderful Nana, Val Collins.
Valda Collins was a strong, cheeky and loving Nana. She loved her hats, shoes, music, sport and most of all her family. She had such a cheeky, joyous laugh that was often combined with mischievous mannerisms that I absolutely adored.Ā
When I was younger, Nana would frequently sneak my sister and I a chocolate bar or a sherbet bomb when we would visit...this was always followed up with "ssshh don't tell". This always resulted in a smile and a giggle. Memories such as this one are memories that I hope to hold onto forever.Ā
Witnessing the progression of dementia in a loved one really emphasised the gratitude I have for the ability to remember such cherished memories. Dementia is a wicked game...in the early stages it was as if someone was dangling a carrot just millimetres from my Nana's nose...in the later stages nothing really made sense, but we always had laughter and love.Ā
Although the Corona Virus took my Nana, dementia significantly affected her quality of life. I could often sense Nana's frustration, confusion and sadness at her own mind being unable to function and provide her with the information she needed when trying to connect with others. For my family it was a goal to never allow for my Nana to feel alone, we would be there as much as we could to laugh, dance, sing, chat or just comfort her as she walked and talked.Ā
The staff at the aged care facility that was my Nana's home for her final years were incredible and were so beautiful and loving towards her. I will be forever grateful and in awe of the staff that took such wonderful care of my Nana and helped her through the various stages of her dementia.Ā
The funds I raise as I run the 107km ("lucky 7's") are all going towards supporting the work that Dementia Australia provides to people like my Nana living with dementia, families like mine and the carers like those at Village Glen Mornington. These services include counselling, support groups, education and training.
I hope my story resonates the importance of raising funds to help in beating dementia.Ā
